Purposeful, integrated light.

Morningside north-side lighting plan showing path lights and uplights coordinated with planting, steps, and terraces
Morningside · North-side lighting plan update · May 2025

Plan lighting alongside planting, circulation, architecture, and outdoor spaces. Sweetfern coordinates design intent with qualified lighting and electrical professionals.

01

Movement + gathering

Consider paths, steps, entrances, terraces, outdoor living spaces, wayfinding, and safety.

02

A measured presence

Address fixture placement, glare, light spill, dark areas, and habitat considerations alongside stonework, garden features, and specimen trees.

03

Dark skies + responsible lighting

Design toward DarkSky International’s responsible outdoor lighting principles: light with a clear purpose, direct it where needed, keep levels low, use controls, and choose warm-colored sources. Coordinate fixture shielding, aiming, output, color temperature, and operating hours with lighting professionals. Review final specifications against applicable local lighting ordinances and any project-specific dark-sky requirements.

  • Use shielded, downward-directed light to reduce glare, light trespass, and sky glow.
  • Choose warm light, generally 3000 K or lower, and avoid unnecessary brightness.
  • Use timers, dimming, or motion controls to keep lighting off when it is not needed.
04

Plan for a growing landscape

Account for changing vegetation as plants mature. Coordinate installation against the landscape plans and specifications.
