A closer look at the landscape

THE LANDSCAPE

A landscape unfolding through stone, planting, and water.

Planted stone steps lead to the pool terrace, through abundant summer borders, and out toward the pond. Stone, planting, and water connect the house and its outdoor spaces with the surrounding landscape.

01Broad stone slabs and low planting soften the edge of the pool, linking the terrace to the house and garden. The water reflects the architecture, trees, and sky, extending the sense of space toward the wooded hills beyond.

02Accolade cherry trees separate the pool terrace from the house, softening the architecture and framing views between the two. Layers of flowering perennials and grasses fill the borders below, while a low stone wall defines the change in level and ties the planting to the terrace.

03Stone steps lead through the garden to the bridge connecting to the garage.

07Planting beyond the pool is intentionally kept low to preserve uninterrupted views of the distant mountains.

08Along the restored pond edge, native and naturalistic plantings replace failing hardscape. The planting matrix is designed to grow into dense, continuous cover that supports wildlife habitat, stabilizes the soil, and creates a resilient bank over time.

10An aerial view of the pond reveals paths that wrap around the water, providing access throughout while connecting distinct garden rooms. Small viewing areas along the pond edge offer places to pause and observe wildlife.

11Viewed from the pool terrace, the house is framed by surrounding trees, shrubs, and garden planting. Broad stone steps draw the eye toward the house, connecting the terrace with the garden and architecture.

12Reclaimed granite raised beds bring together a kitchen garden and cutting garden within easy reach of the kitchen and barbecue area. Herbs and peppers are interplanted with flowers and foliage for cutting. Dahlias and annual cutting flowers are planted in succession throughout the growing season for continuous color and a steady supply of blooms for floral arrangements, alongside herbs and edible flowers for garnishes.

13The stone path leads to the pond, with lighting along its full length for evening strolls and outdoor entertaining.

14The deck at the tree house offers a place to relax, take in views across the pond, and watch wildlife among the surrounding plantings.

15An aerial view of the house looks out across a sequence of meadows and the wider landscape. With approximately 1,200 feet of elevation change from top to bottom, the property includes three large meadows, a floodplain, two ponds, and woodland, all connected by a network of paths and trails.
